Occasionally I get asked to re-make something someone saw Super Coffee Bros had made. I relish these opportunities as it’s always challenging to create something of comparable quality to the excellent work done by Super Coffee Bros before they ceased production.
This is one of those controllers.
I take no credit for the design of this controller, the composition was done by Super Coffee Bros and the illustration was done by Kamuuei.
The front of the controller features a beautiful illustration of Lucina from the Fire Emblem series drawn by Kamuuei. The illustration was cut out by hand using a fresh scalpel and wraps around the curves of the controller in a way that vinyl can’t. This is because transfer paper, when treated properly, dissolved using the right chemicals and when proper patience is exhibited, is quite malleable and is capable of some truly remarkable adhesion.
To the right and underneath the transfer of Lucina is the text “I challenge my fate” written by hand in white ink.
The back of the controller features the client’s tag SOBA in white with a gold shadow. This was done using transfer paper that I hand inked to get the colours I wanted.
The controller has a gradient from light blue at the top to darker blue at the bottom. The background is covered in pale blue transfers of butterflies, each delicately cut out by hand using a scalpel. The butterflies were lacquered using a glitter lacquer so they sparkle as the controller shifts in the light.
The entire controller is lacquered using many layers of Mipa winner matte lacquer. I sanded using 1500 grit electro-coated sandpaper between each layer to get the smoothest possible texture.
